Maverick
In the months prior to September 2006, roller coaster enthusiasts around the world were eagerly awaiting details about Cedar Point’s forthcoming 17th scream machine, Maverick, the most anticipated ride announcement for 2007. To educate and excite the public about this new coaster, WDD Online developed a website to showcase various ride details as well as offer high-quality downloads including video, wallpapers, and even MySpace templates.
Maverick is themed to the Wild West, and as such the website was designed to have a western feel to it, down to the color scheme, typography, and use of stylish period graphic ornaments. Flash was used as a medium to present large-resolution, high-quality video, as well as to animate an aerial view of the layout with the train in motion. Meanwhile, traditional photo galleries and webcams have now been complemented with informative podcasts and video interviews.
The Cedar Point fan base is large, and to increase positive word-of-mouth advertising, a variety of online fun offerings were made available. Desktop wallpaper images, including some in widescreen and dual-monitor formats, have proven to be highly popular – while a wide assortment of AIM icons and forum avatars allow fans to express their individuality online. Lastly, the massive popularity of the MySpace community encouraged the creation of downloadable templates users could insert into their personal profiles, helping to spread word of Maverick further.
